hat is One Thing?
One Thing is a special three-day event that will gather church leaders with many different passions and interests from all regions of the RCA to enjoy time together and learn from each other. Whether you are:
- engaged in revitalization, church planting, leadership, discipleship, or mission,
- a member of a commission or team,
- a chaplain,
- a clerk,
- or a specialized interim minister,
…you are seeking “One Thing” first–the kingdom of God.
What Are the Benefits?
By gathering with a diverse representation of the RCA, all participants will:
- Strengthen existing relationships.
- Build new relationships.
- Deepen their commitment to seek first the kingdom of God.
People who are not meeting with a particular RCA group will:
- Learn how they can be part of the exciting momentum of “Our Call,” the RCA’s 10-year goal to revitalize congregations and plant new churches.
- Experience practical and helpful resources for ministry through workshops and training opportunities.
- Benefit from two evening programs and an outstanding speaker.
Special Guest Dr. Reggie McNeal
Recently, RCA regional synod and General Synod Council staff gathered for a retreat where Reggie McNeal was the speaker. Here’s what RCA general secretary Wes Granberg-Michaelson had to say:
“McNeal is passionate about the movement to be a missional church.
“In McNeal’s thinking, today’s churches are faced with making three major transitions:
- From internal focus to external focus.
- From being program driven to being driven by people development.
- From church-based leadership to “apostolic” leadership…leadership that is missional, kingdom oriented, genuinely spiritual, visionary, and able to grasp new opportunities, and that develops others through teams. That’s a particular kind of leadership needed in many, many places as the church seeks a missional future in today’s culture.”
Dr. Reggie McNeal is a missional leadership specialist for the Leadership Network, consulting with congregations and church leaders who are intentionally pursuing a “missional agenda.” He is also the former director of Leadership Development for the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
McNeal’s three books, Revolution in Leadership, A Work of the Heart, and The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church, target issues critical to the formation and development of Christian leaders in North America.
McNeal draws his insight from 20 years of local congregational ministry as well as from his consulting and speaking for denominational groups, parachurch ministry organizations, seminars, and hundreds of local church leaders.
Who Will Attend?
All RCA church leaders are invited to attend.
Many RCA groups will invite their members to gather during the daytime hours of the event. (The event’s daytime hours have been reserved to allow for this.)
For example, some groups (such as commissions, councils, clerks, and chaplains) will combine a regularly scheduled meeting with “One Thing.”
Other groups (such as planters, parent church pastors, coaches, and network facilitators) will be able to invite One Thing participants to the training and fellowship events that they regularly hold.
This will open a way to help leaders from across the RCA experience the vision and excitement of congregational revitalization and church planting.
All participants will be expected to attend the evening dinner celebrations on Thursday, January 24, and Friday, January 25. These times together as a group will be important for building community and for our development as leaders.
How Much Does It Cost?
Registration for One Thing is $400 per person, which includes:
- Two nights’ lodging–double occupancy (people who desire single occupancy will need to pay an additional amount)
- Two evening banquets and the presentation by Dr. Reggie McNeal
- A Thursday afternoon reception
- All refreshments at the breaks on Friday
The leaders of each RCA group will work with their members on ways to cover the cost of attending the event.
Each RCA group is responsible for the costs of its own daytime programming.
Each participant pays for his or her own breakfast and lunch, travel to the event, and incidental expenses.
Information on how to register for the event will be passed on to you as soon as it is available.
